It’s springtime, and that means everything is starting to come alive! All the snow has melted, and the spring rains have washed away all the dirt and grime off the sidewalks and foundations. In your home, you can open up the curtains and let the sunshine in, which light up all the corners of the house. You can also open up the windows and let the sweet spring breeze get rid of the all that stale winter air.

Spring is a great time to take care of your home and address repairs. Did you ever wonder if there’s something more that can be done to freshen things up and make things look new in your home? A great place to start is the focal point of the room – the fireplace. Now is a wonderful time for a fireplace facelift!

What Can Be Done

simple modern fireplaceSo, what can be done to make your fireplace look new and different? There are several things, and it doesn’t necessarily have to break the bank! For instance, you can use a new color of paint to give the fireplace a new look. Whether you’re looking at painting your fireplace or the brick surround, a color that brings contrast to the room will draw all eyes to the fireplace. While it’s new paint, a new mantel or even just painting your existing mantel will add that extra special touch to your living space. If you don’t like the idea of painting your fireplace, you can strip the original finish, and then stain and varnish the mantel instead. Or perhaps, you’d like to go all out and get a new mantel to dress up the fireplace.

After you’ve decided on the look of the surround and the mantel for the fireplace, it’s time to start looking at what to put on and above it. If you like an old fashioned look, find some old family pictures with weathered-looking frames. You can even add some flowers in a simple mason jar with a little twine tied around it, especially peonies, which add a sweet, old-time look. If you prefer a more dressed up look, put your favorite family pictures in modern looking frames, add candles in classic candle holders, and some flowers in a cut glass vase. To go one step further, find two large vases to set on either side of the fireplace and fill them with feathery fronds.
